Surviving Progress

A hunter in 3000 BCE learns how to kill two mammoths instead of just one; he’s made progress. As technology and experience develops, groups of hunter can eat even better by killing 30 or so at once but driving them off a cliff. Their methods become so effective, they fall into a progress trap.

Without the foresight to see that they will drive many megafauna to extinction, they persist in this trap until this food source has depleted.

And I would say we still do this today. Running 21st century tech. and methods on far outdated rules that benefit those who have sway over the rule at the expense of, in all projected forecasts, many forms of life on Earth. Foremost our own.
